Re: 75th birthday celebration in Winnipeg, (He's Our) Man.

Post by Mondomando »

Birthday and all round celebrations of our man: Leonard Cohen, are being planned in Winnipeg for September 18, 19, 20. Venues participating are Times Change(d) and The CYRK.

FEATURING
(this is not all confirmed - we only started recruiting artists - so this list will change and grow)

TOFU
CR Avery
Scott Nolan
Michael Peters
Ann Vriend
Dan Frechette
Drek Daa - That Polish Guy
etc ......
DJ Coda's L. Cohen Dance Party every night @ the CYRK ... with T'ai Pu

The CYRK is a wonderful art performance space run by Drek Daa who is a local poet/singer-songwriter and arts activist. Some of you will recall he recently had his recording ""Hey Leonard Come to the CRYK" forwarded to Leonard Cohen (who liked it, responded favourably and graciously but wasn't able "to celebrate with the Winnipeg poets. This tour runs on solitude and sleep.").
).
Check out Drek and the CYRK at:

Times Change(d) is "Winnipeg's Roots venue".
Find more at:

http://www.highandlonesomeclub.ca/

We are in the planning stages and any local or para-local Cohenites that would like to become involved or get more info can contact Drek at:

darek@drekdaa.com

Merci and see you at the festivities.

So, as irony would have it, I look to find a particular person's most recent posting, and find myself here... to wish a man 10 years Leonard's junior a happy birthday... 8)

Leonard from Montreal ~ a very lovely man in the finest tradition ~ HAPPY 65th BIRTHDAY!!!

I hope that you're not on the Forum because you're somewhere else tonight celebrating with friends and loved ones.

Lizzy,

You are so kind to mention my birthday.

In fact I celebrated with a birthday dinner with my family, reminising with my son about the Boston concert at the Wang which we attended together (he's a convert now) and now I am relaxing listening to the July concert at the O2.

A mellow way to continue to the next decade!

Hopefully with an amount of energy comparable to what LC has. Actually half his energy would be fine!

I go back with Leonard to when I was connected to both Frank Scott, and Louis Dudek at McGill University both of whom, together with Irving Layton and LC were the vanguard of the poetry movement in Montreal in the 50's and 60's . And, I did see him perform at Sir George Williams in a very small venue and an audience of about 25.

Who would have thought I would be writing about him 40 years later!!!

Thanks again, Lizzy

Hi Leonard ~

It sounds like you couldn't have asked for a better birthday. Such satisfaction for you knowing that your son has taken the passing of the torch regarding Leonard. A happy celebration for you reminiscing about a concert attended with him and closing out your night watching a video of another one. A happy happy birthday.

May we find you here with an even greater accumulation of memories a decade from now. Oh, yes, and some energy wouldn't hurt, either. I'm putting in for half of Leonard's energy right now, too. I still can't believe it. You should've seen him at Red Rocks... an all-out, full, old-fashioned skip completely off the stage.

I never got a chance to really talk with you at the Beacon. As I recall, I introduced you and Jarkko and that was close to about it. On the details you've shared here, though, I must say you look the part of having had those Montreal connections way back then in such a wonderfully different time from what we live in now.

Ah. A venue of about 25. That's close to the size of a house party.

What a delightful recurring realization that must be for you when you let your mind go there, that here you are 40 years later, following that young man you knew so long ago.

Happy Birthday, Leonard.

today's google home page marks the birthday of igor stravinsky.

i see no reason why leonard's 75th shouldn't be similarly commemorated.

i think we should all lobby the chief doodler to make sure this happens.

even ultra-orthodox jews may be able to join in the festive fun now that there's a dedicated search engine just for them.

singing and dancing isn't alien to judaism - e.g. purim

let's hope leonard's birthday isn't on a saturday!!

i don't know whether the ultra-orthodox might disapprove of leonard?

I like this idea a lot. I keep trying to think of what the graphic should look like. Seems like it would have to incorporate Hallelujah somehow, since that's the iconic LC thing, maybe the word shaded in the background with notes coming out or something. Although I guess thinking something up would be the job of the google doodler! It would be a shame if he was not familiar with Leonard and this idea went nowhere.

But why am I reminded of LC quoting his mentor, Irving Layton, who points to .....

"the inescapable lousiness of growing old"

Well, we just have to keep on skipping at each encore!!

Re: 75th birthday - mention in the times?

Post by sebmelmoth2003 »

birthdays are mentioned each day on a page in the print edition called the daily universal register.

online, birthdays get a segment to themselves - e.g. here are today's birthdays : http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_a ... 564168.ece

Birthday honours

Periodically a reader asks how we decide whose birthdays to feature on the Daily Universal Register page, and periodically I explain, but not for a few years now, so in response to Gerry Hanson’s inquiry this week — “Sometimes a name appears of someone obscure, so how do you decide from the hundreds of potential names each day?” — here goes.

The selection is entirely in the gift (and at the whim) of the editor of the Register, who aims for as broad a spread as possible of backgrounds and interests. From time to time he extends the existing list of candidates by inviting his Times colleagues to nominate figures of interest in their specialist fields, although not every name will be familiar to every reader, of course. It used to be the case that once on the list, names stayed on it until death did them part, but these days pressures on space and the desire to include new names means that some people may be dropped.

Hi all,

Leonard's birthday is fast approaching. I have been reading about the mosaic idea and think it is wonderful and personal. But I also came across this over the weekend and thought that it might be fun. It was put together for American Idol winner Kris Allen's birthday and the song is his single No Boundaries. Obviously, we'd use one of Leonard's songs.

I have already been in contact with someone in our community who could pull off the technical aspects of putting something like this together. I'll let him out himself when the time is right.

So, can we get a vote on these two ideas?

Mosaic or Video

We need to get one of these ideas off the ground. What do you say we decide by Sunday midnight GMT? Let's hear your votes.

Would you mind explaining the mosaic again.
I got bored with the video after a short time...
So I guess I vote for the mosaic..

I like the video idea, but I'm afraid there's too many of us who want to be part of it to fit in one song.
