I grew up with Leonard Cohen's songs.

My father is the real Leo fan in our family (and hey I didn't know he was so much in love with my mother!), and he taught me how to understand about the words Leo sang. My musical education was a little too classic-Royal-Academy to appreciate his music. Sometimes he tried too hard to place the notes. I soon saw that he was a poet rather than a musician. I think I fell in love with his words a little bit.

I kept him for myself all these years. You know how hard it is to ignore gazillion fans while listening to him. A place close to the stage might help, though. I stuck to the Best Of of my father's. Dear Heather - The Letters - why do I keep relating to such songs I do not know. I seem to feel like the characters in The Hours . I missed the only time Leo was in Istanbul. I had to choose world peace over him, I was in Guatemala at the time. Was it a mistake, I can't say. Did it hurt? Yes. I was angry at all the audience, including my father and my sister who later told me rakı helped them through the concert. That old lady who had been listening to Leo since the beginning of time, she got to be there. Being 13 hours of flight away, I only got to hear what I heard over and over again. That chord in B minor.

I am not Leo's most loyal fan. I am not trying to be, either. I am aware he may die before I get the chance to see him. My father made a long-distance call the night of the concert - I got to hear The Anthem just like I did as an mp3. I got another call the other day. I would like to thank The Fedora for wasting all that money for a 15-second part of The Partisan . I can say he is the most loyal fan of Leo's. I remember telling him a few lines of The Letters and him going crazy over them. Or that's how I remember it anyway. Keep up the Leo-love! I know the world needs it. I just can't do it anymore.

I loved reading your comments. I loved the way people took the time to explain how they felt at Leo's concerts. I'm just glad there is such a wonderful poet who can reach out to thousands. I also appreciate there is a place to share how I feel. And I also learned there wasn't any free sheet music of Leo's online. I guess he needs the money:) I wonder how it would feel like to shout "I'm your man" to Leo's face while he's on stage. How can elevator music be so full of meaning? Leo taught me that was poetry. I try to find it in contemporary Turkish poets now. Who knew it would be so hard? It's like trying to play Mozart's Turkish March on the piano - you know what you want, you even get close to it, but it's just not there.

Lastly, I would like to thank ultramarine for his/her lovely introduction and blixa for telling so much with so few words... I remember listening to A Thousand Kisses Deep for the umpteenth time, when I realized some magical thing about it. It feels really good to know others are sharing the same feelings. I only have one question about this concert in Istanbul now. Would I faint or run away in tears, had I been there? After all, one concert created thoughts of suicide at the age of 27 in one's head - but that may be exaggerating it a little too much.

Stuck in the moment..... and can't get out of it... That's exactly what had happened to me... A big paranthesis is opened, wide opened and the life is simply trying to squeeze in.... run away in tears? In my case I couldn't run away, to this day, I am still crying everytime I come across with Leonard's eyes in the last few seconds of the Tower of Song from the I am Your Fan DVD. And with "everytime" I should be frank.....I am talking about "the weekly rerun of the Tower of Song" ritual that I inherited since last August... As the camera fades out, the baptismal waterfall from my eyes begins...
In this forum I am feeling a little bit uneasy talking about this hyperbolic state of mine....Everybody is so content, so much at ease with Leonard, his poems, his songs, what he means for them... And here I am, still contemplating what to do with the memory of these three hours from an August night....
I envy all the workers of art, for the verdict is to create for them... For me for whom the verdict is to consume, I have to admit I am being consumed by the vaguely coherent deduction that I barely managed to fractionate after almost a year....It's this uncommon humility that chrushes me, that I still don't know what to do with....
