The black symbol between the hands is the Hebrew letter "Shin" (in a traditional script that is used in sacred scrolls and other religious artifacts). It is here as the first letter in the scared name "Shaday", one of the names of God. This name has a guardian role, ans is used in protective amulets and other such artifacts. The hands are arranged with a gap between the fingers to form the same letter. This position of the hand is used by a priest ("Cohen") when he imparts a blessing upon the parish (this is done daily during the morning service, twice on some holy days).

In short, this logo is a symbol of our Cohen's wish to impart blessings and protection upon us :)

Thanks Brightnow. Knew about the hands and why they were shaped that way but had never noticed the letter in the middle before. I thought it looked like a flag!...ooooh er dear me  .....But at least I can forgive my ignorance whereas some others don't seem to be able to! Again thank you for the swift reply and the info. Very interesting. :D

Apology accepted Eskimo! I have to say I've been doubly educated this evening. Firstly as to the meaning of the symbols and now as to the reference to 'bits'! Who knew the LC forum could be this educational!! :D

I can also confirm that it appears to be a Shin, and is of special significance to the kohen (cohen, kohanim or cohanim) for giving blessings. I think we can only guess at Leonard's intent and whether it has any significance for anyone who is neither Jewish and/or reads Hebrew.

I've been interested in the logo - thanks to Maarten for pointing me to this discussion.

I saw the logo with the hearts with the Kohan hands symbol and the letter shin on the set list posted here. Is it used in other places as well? Does anyone know if it was designed by Leonard Cohen? The symbols are familiar to me but I haven't seen them together like this before.

Maarten:
My compliments to you for all your hard work doing a chronicle of all Leonard Cohen's concerts. And in such a user friendly format, too. I am sure it is appreciated by everyone.

Tom:
Once a thread is "closed", are the contents still accessible? There is some good stuff in this thread in addition to set lists.
