The 2007 Songwriters Hall of Fame

Post by YankovicGretzky »

The nominees for the 2007 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony have been announced. Only 5 to 7 songwriters are inducted each year. Leonard Cohen is on the ballot for the first time. He has been eligible since 1988-1989. Artists become eligible 20 years after their first release.

Just so you can get an idea of what Leonard Cohen's pages will look like on the SWHOF website once he is inducted, here's Bob Dylan's page. Inducted in 1982.

There are no higher awards for musicians in the U.S. than being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and The Songwriters Hall of Fame. Once Leonard gets into both, his career will be complete.

I really don't think you need to judge his career by that assessment. Whether or not they have decided to recognize his work, its value remains the same.

If you are looking so hard for recognition, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame was wonderful acknowledgment from his homeland.

The value of his work and the effect it has on me certainly remain the same; but it would be nice if when I say "Cohen" people would start knowing who I'm talking about. Maybe this would help.

I am as happy for Leonard with the U.S. recognition as I was for the Canadian recognition. It seems the U.S. is following suit after Canada, in realization of their major oversight all this time... even so, I'm glad to see it. At least Canada has known right along the treasure they had. Hopefully, it will go beyond the ballot with the U.S., where Leonard has gone virtually 'unrecognized' since the beginning. In that sense, this seems a major step. I'm still looking forward to the day where the response is no longer, "Who??"

Congratulations to Leonard on this, but also to whoever determines the nominees. In this case, congratulations on your discernment.

My sentiments exactly, Laura. We were writing them at the same time.

Now that you know who the nominees are, which 6 artists would you like to see get inducted with Leonard? Who would you like to see in the room with Leonard on that grand night?

Merle Haggard
Leon Russel
Cat Stevens
Gordon Lightfoot
Lou Reed
Robbie Robertson

Hi Yankovic ~

I'm afraid you're peeking into the wrong purse on that one. Is it Lifetime Membership or nothing at all?

Thanks.

Yes! If you are not in the music industry, it's all or nothing at all.

They would send you the ballots in the mail for you to fill out and mail back.
