New bootlegs 2016/2017 (so far 16)

Post by jarkko »

Note from the administrator: I am collecting information about all new unauthorized bootlegs to this thread. Some have been discussed in other threads, too, but here you can see all of them summarized.

The contents of these releases have been copied from FM or TV broadcasts without permission of Leonard Cohen and other owners of the legal rights. We don't encourage members to buy these releases, so this listing is for information only.

Seems like lots of people are trying to cash in on the recent sad events.
(Quoting Dave Meloni who emailed me about the first album).

Some of these albums were first found by our friend Dominique Boile.
Information shown here has been copied from the UK Amazon website

Product Description
On 13th October 1979, Leonard Cohen began his most extensive tour to date in support of his sixth studio album, Recent Songs , with a concert in Gothenburg, Sweden. Entitled 'The Smokey Life Tour', this 48-concert European leg of what would eventually become a world tour (ultimately encompassing too Australia, the USA, and in November 1980, Israel) progressed through Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, England and Ireland. Cohen surrounded himself with a coterie of superb musicians. As a nucleus, he co-opted the Austin, Texas-based jazz band, Passenger (Steve Meador on drums, Roscoe Beck on bass, Mitch Watkins on guitar, Bill Ginn on keyboards and Paul Ostermayer on sax and flute). Further extending the core group's capabilities were violinist Raffi Hakopian and John Bilezikjian on the oud - an 11-string pear-shaped instrument, visually similar to a mandolin - all of whom had also contributed to 'Recent Songs'. Completing the ensemble, Leonard's brace of backing singers on the jaunt were long-time friend and colleague Jennifer Warnes (who later released her own Cohen tribute album, 'Famous Blue Raincoat' in 1987) and another Cohen collaborator and future song-writing partner, Sharon Robinson. This concert, from Bonn's prestigious 2,000 capacity Beethovenhalle, was recorded towards the end of the European extravaganza on 3rd December, and, as is evident, the cast were performing superbly by this juncture. 'Recent Songs' was, and remained, a personal favourite of Leonard s: "I think I like 'Recent Songs' the best. The producer was Henry Levy - I was studying with Roshi at the time in Los Angeles and it was appropriate that I worked with a Los Angeles producer. He had that great quality that Bob Johnston (Bob Dylan's producer) had: a lot of faith in the singer and he just let it happen. He introduced me to the group Passenger. I'd always wanted to combine those Middle Eastern or Eastern European sounds with the rhythmic possibilities of a jazz or rock'n'roll rhythm section," he later stated.

Product Description
SUPERB BROADCAST RECORDING FROM PARIS IN 1976 The legendary Olympia concert hall, close to the Opéra in Paris, made a fine venue for this excellent 1976 performance by Leonard Cohen and his band. At this relatively early point in his musical career, Leonard was demonstrably more popular in Europe than in any other continent. He was particularly revered in France - hence there were no less than four consecutive concerts in Paris during his extensive 55 date European tour in the spring and summer of 76. Leonard was also, of course, a native of the French Canadian province of Quebec (although his home town, Westmount, was actually in an English-speaking district of Montreal). Of particular significance to the French audience was Cohen's The Partisan, a poignant version of Anna Marly and Hy Zaret's La Complainte Du Partisan, concerning the heroic struggle of the French Resistance during World War II. The song is often confused with another of Marly's composition, the Chant Des Partisans, which was hugely popular in the 1940's, when it almost became a second national-anthem alongside La Marseillaise. The Partisan remained a favourite staple in Leonard's live sets, and he routinely sang several of the verses in French. However, further cementing his appeal to this Parisian audience, at this show he takes the unusual step of singing his classic Bird On The Wire partially in French as well. Another rarity during this remarkable performance is Do I Have To Dance All Night, of which there is no studio version in existence - just a live version preserved on a rare European 7" single release. Also probably unknown to most of the audience prior to this evening is Store Room, a song that would only see a belated release more than 30 years later (as a bonus cut on the 2007 reissue of his first record). By 1976, Leonard Cohen had already released a quartet of highly acclaimed albums - all of which are represented in this concert s selection. His outstanding 1967 debut, 'Songs Of Leonard Cohen', is featured by way of the solitary - but beautiful - Suzanne, while his sophomore release 'Songs From A Room' (1969) contributes Lady Midnight and Story Of Isaac in addition to the aforementioned Bird On The Wire and The Partisan. Famous Blue Raincoat is drawn from 'Songs Of Love And Hate' (1971) and Leonard's then most recent album, 'New Skin For The Old Ceremony', is more fulsomely recommended by live versions of Who By Fire, I Tried To Leave You, There Is A War, Chelsea Hotel #2, Lover Lover Lover and Is This What You Wanted.

Product Description
RARE INTERVIEW COLLECTION FEATURING LEONARD COHEN IN CONVERSATION While hearing Leonard Cohen sing his self-composed songs is one of life s finest experiences, to simply hear the man talk comes a close second. And while Leonard remains one of the best raconteurs in the business, to hear him converse and discuss all manner of topics across more than two hours of interviews with intelligent and sympathetic journalists, is a sheer joy. Never less than entertaining, wise, humorous and enlightening, Cohen is also majestically humble, appropriately self-depreciating and never mean spirited nor arrogant. And whether discussing his years spent meditating in an LA monastery or the wicked theft of his life savings while doing so - or indeed his oft- noted attraction to the opposite sex, a topic much prompted by one female interviewer - this sage-like man speaks with honesty, humour and dignity at all times. This DVD includes over 2 hours of rare filmed interviews with Leonard Cohen from various junctures across his career to date. A truly fascinating film is created from these sessions which all at once provide one of the best and most fascinating documents on this legendary performer.

Product Description
SUPERB 1976 PERFORMANCE FROM COHEN WHILE ON HIS NEW SKINS TOUR This magisterial concert by the inimitable Canadian singer-songwriter and poet, Leonard Cohen, was broadcast live from Montreux, Switzerland, towards the end of his 55-date European tour of 1976. By this stage in his career, the 41-year old Cohen had released four studio albums, debuting with the outstanding Songs Of Leonard Cohen for CBS Records in 1967. Six of that superb record s best songs are presented this evening: Hey, That s No Way to Say Goodbye, One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong, Sisters Of Mercy, The Stranger Song and So Long, Marianne. The latter, in particular, is a spell-binding performance, a gorgeous homage to Cohen s lover and muse Marianne Ihlen (1935-2016), and a song which many fans consider was given its most entrancing performance at this very show. Cohen s 1969 sophomore album, the stark Songs From A Room , supplies seven songs to the set, including the classic and probably best known cut from the entire Cohen canon, Bird On The Wire, which is also given the singular honour of being performed twice, and is accompanied by You Know Who I Am, The Partisan (Cohen s moving adaptation of the wartime French resistance anthem Le Chant Des Partisans), the bleak Story Of Isaac, The Butcher, Lady Midnight and Tonight Will Be Fine. The similarly uncompromising 1971 album Songs of Love and Hate contributes the lively Diamonds in the Mine, and Famous Blue Raincoat (later adapted by another of Cohen s ex-backing singers, Jennifer Warnes, on her own 1987 album of Cohen covers Famous Blue Raincoat ). Oddly in a unique moment, the haunting Joan Of Arc (the penultimate performance of the evening) is abruptly abandoned by Cohen who calls a halt just as it s reaching its conclusion. Half-a-dozen further songs promote Leonard s then most recent album, the comparatively lush New Skin for the Old Ceremony . Undoubted highlights are his paean to a lover from the past, Janice Joplin, on Chelsea Hotel #2, the chilling roll-call of Who By Fire, I Tried to Leave You, Lover, Lover, Lover and the plaintive Is This What You Wanted. There are two songs performed too which do not originate on studio albums; the rare Do I have To Dance All Night was only otherwise issued as a 45rpm single in Europe, in a live version recorded earlier on this same tour in Paris. Finally there is Store Room, a 1967 song that remained resolutely non-album until being added as a bonus to the 2007 reissue of his debut.

Leonard Cohen, live at Massey Hall, Toronto 9th November 1988. By 1988 Leonard Cohen had undergone something of a renaissance in North America, propelled by the success of Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat album in 1987. He supported his widely acclaimed and synthesizer-heavy I m Your Man album with a tour of Europe, the US and his native Canada, where this superb performance, broadcast live on CBC Radio, of his release was captured.

EXCEPTIONAL LIVE RECORDING FROM LEONARD COHEN IN ZURICH 1993 Leonard Cohen s 1993 world tour may well have been the man s last had he not discovered in 2004 that his manager had been embezzling his earnings - leaving him with little from his long career in music and publishing to assist in providing a comfortable retirement. After a protracted legal battle, he once again took to the stage, at the age of 73, for his first tour in 15 years. The shows undertaken were of course magnificent, but it would be rather heartless to suggest this made the whole sordid affair any less contemptable. This latter day touring has resulted in a slew of live releases from his record company, Columbia. Tours for I m Your Man and The Future were not served anything like so well however, with a paltry single volume representing dates from both jaunts, and nothing in the way of an entire concert recording emerging. The release of this double CD changes this state of affairs however, presenting as it does Leonard s complete performance, recorded for FM Broadcast, at Zurich s Kongresshaus on 21st May 1993. A long term underground favourite among tape collectors, the perfection of the audio quality alongside a quite sublime performance make for one of the finest ever live Cohen albums.

‘Upon a smokey evening’ CD - contents as good as you’d expect, but if you compare the tracks it has in common with ‘Field Commander Cohen’ (noticeably slower, and around a semitone lower in pitch) it’s clear that there has been an uncorrected issue with the speeds of the various tape machines used in an otherwise very nice recording. It’s a pity, because the recording is very clear, and in many ways it’s a much more satisfying listen than the official CD. It would have been so straightforward to get it right…
