malcolm chapman - tony hancock - the day off
about 20 minutes into iPm - item with malcolm chapman discussing a lost episode.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b01464dm
------
presumably inspired by article in guardian :
...The script was rediscovered last year when Stevens found an unmarked folder in Galton's cellar and asked Malcolm Chapman, a comedy historian who had been collating the archives, what it was. When he was told, said Stevens, he "dropped it on the floor. I couldn't quite process what Malcolm was saying"...

The Day Off + Ray Galton and Alan Simpson
World Premiere Performance: The Day Off + Ray Galton and Alan Simpson
29 january, 2012.
---
The Day Off is a legendary lost film of British cinema, written for Tony Hancock by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
In this very funny, poignant comedy Hancock would have played a London bus driver on his day off. With just 24 hours of freedom, can he find happiness, purpose - even love?...

Re: Leonard and Tony Hancock/Ray Galton
missing hancocks to be broadcast with impersonator.
not sure i like the idea of someone assuming the great man's mantle.
The Matador
The Missing Hancocks
Between 1954 and 1959, BBC Radio recorded 102 episodes of Ray Galton and Alan Simpson's comedy classic Hancock's Half Hour. The first modern sitcom, it made stars of Tony Hancock, Sid James and Kenneth Williams, and launched Galton and Simpson on one of the most successful comedy-writing partnerships in history. But 20 episodes of the show are missing from the BBC archives, and have not been heard since their original transmission nearly sixty years ago. Now, five of those episodes have been lovingly re-recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC Radio Theatre, featuring a stellar cast led by Kevin McNally as The Lad Himself.
Tonight's episode: The Matador. Tony uses Sid's travel agency to book a holiday in Spain, little knowing that Sid also runs a bullfighting business....
Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and with the classic score newly recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the show stars Kevin McNally, Kevin Eldon, Simon Greenall, Robin Sebastian and Susy Kane. The Matador was last broadcast in October 1955.

Re: Leonard and Tony Hancock/Ray Galton
Whenever people say Leonard is gloomy, or depressing, I find it just so wrong.
Gloomy and depressing are bad things, and I couldn't associate them with Leonard ever.
In my head, I find the most apt description is that Leonard's music has a dark beauty.
And that's probably why I derive .so. much joy from it.

`face to face` - tony hancock
old programme on iplayer at the moment.
Tony Hancock was the vulnerable clown who became a household name with Hancock's Half Hour.
John Freeman cross-examined leading personalities of the day.
At the time Freeman's interview was heavily criticised. He was considered too brusque, almost ruthless in his technique. But the two became close friends and it is an interview many remember. (1960)

Re: Leonard and Tony Hancock/Ray Galton
Sadly Alan Simpson died earlier this year on 8 February 2017
I guess it all started for me sometime around Christmas 1967 and now, goodness me, it's.........2018 and over fifty years later.
No one ever listens to me. I might as well be a Leonard Cohen record.
