First Lineup Announcement

Monday, August 27

Main Stage Act Announced for 2008 Leonard Cohen Festival

We’re pleased to unveil the first of several acts confirmed to appear at 2008 International Leonard Cohen Event July 25-27 in Edmonton, Alberta. Online registration for the event will be available on September 24, 2007.

Check back for updates often. We’ll be adding artists to the line-up as soon as they are confirmed.

In his first appearance at a Leonard Cohen Event organizers are proud to welcome Canadian singer songwriter PETER ELKAS http://www.peterelkas.com/

“He has a wonderfully soulful voice and a great sense of melody that makes me want to write and sing better and try harder.”
Ron Sexsmith’s on Peter Elkas’ album “Wall of Fire”

PETER ELKAS’ sophomore album “Wall of Fire” is an outpouring of beautiful, introspective songs. “I want people to feel romantic about it,” Elkas says. “It is a romantic record in the sense of romance between a man and a woman, but there’s also a friendship vibe going on.”

The whole ball started rolling when Elkas’ manager encouraged him to record some demos as the first step in making a follow-up to his debut album “Party of One”. Armed with tracks written in a Toronto apartment while he was feeling “hopeful and revitalized,” Elkas hit the studio to put together a four-song demo. Shortly after the demos were mailed to potential producers, his phone rang. It was an agent on the line, calling on behalf of Charlie Sexton. He thought Sexton and Elkas would be a perfect match. That was when Elkas “started to get very excited about the possibilities.”

Making an album with Sexton is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The Austin, Texas based musician, Sexton has recorded with Ron Wood, Keith Richards and Bob Dylan. His producing credits include Lucinda Williams’ “Essence” and Edie Brickell’s “Volcano”.

Backed by his band jokingly referred to as “The Elkaholics” PETER ELKAS continues to create “…inspiring music for songwriters, romantics and fans of honest soul,” according to Joel Plaskett, fellow Canadian songwriter and musician. “Aspiring soul men must take note: “Wall of Fire” causes jealousy and then inspiration,”

Don’t miss PETER ELKAS at the 2008 Leonard Cohen Festival!

All elements of the event are being configured specifically with the international fan community in mind including the 24/7 hospitality suite etc. There has been a lot of web-based promotion, would be hard to miss I think. Registration has begun at http://leonardcohenevent.info/registration/ The dates were picked specifically because they were suggested by the leaders in Berlin, and the fact that they coincide with the Calgary Folk Fest is proving to be a great boon in terms of arranging the participation of high profile artists who will perform at both events. It will be a great event - some are calling it "The Woodstock of Cohen events" - and lots more information will become available over the next few weeks. Lila Klassen will be in charge of the hospitality suite. Other roles like directing the open stage and event booklet and walking tour etc. will be assigned over the next few weeks. There is good momentum from our highly successful local 2007 Leonard Cohen Festival just ending and now on to the big International Event in 2008!

Hmmm, acres of mud and most people going home before Jimmy Hendrix takes the stage. I do hope it will be nothing like that.

p.s. ignore the carpers.

Not claiming an exact replica of Woodstock! Lol! It was just an analogy made by someone living much farther south, and I think they were thinking of the good stuff, not the bad!

Cheers. - Kim

As your hospitality coordinator, I promise naked people in mud. Or, since that's pretty darn illegal in Canada (at least in a rented hall at a high class hotel), at the very least pictures of muddy naked people!

Well a high class hotel would object to the mud. What about mudless naked people? Are you sure the hotel would be happy with dirty pictures on their walls? You are are an enlightened choice for hospitality co-ordinator. :D

Hospitality coordinators MUST be open minded! It's part of the job description... How can you run a good party if you've never partied yourself? :) Oh the stories I could tell....

Darn those confidentiality agreements.
