PBS interview with Leonard

Post by jarkko »

From Rudi Schmid:

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/indepth_cov ... cohen.html

PBS today (28 June) on its NewsHour (which is repeated seveeral times 28
June to early 29 June, e.g., 1:30AM locally) had a longish segment on
Leonard Cohen, mostly devoted to three readingss and an interview.

6:42 min of the interview (including reading of "Mission") is available on the page in RealAudio.

Oh, I LIKE this - it is SO different from the usual lazy, facile and inaccurate 'suicidal' comments:

'His music, which was especially popular in the 70s and 80s, is famous for its emotionally rich and poetic lyrics. His work is known for its often explicit exploration of religion, isolation, sex, and complex interpersonal relationships.'
Only just found this video of LC:

This one does make me cry.

From what I saw and heard, it was a great interview.

My mother called to alert me that Leonard was on TV (she watches "The Newshour with Jim Lehrer" each night).

So I missed the very first part of the interview (he was reading "Thousands" when I turned it on. I was really impressed by his description of the differences between song and poetry. One needs to be more concerned with tempo with song whereas poetry is more personal and moves back and forth in time. When asked if his work was largely autobiographical, Leonard readily acknowledged that it is, however he mentioned that this also includes the imagination which ages like the rest of the body.

He was reading the poem, "Mission" when the National Weather Service broke in to warn that there were severe thunder storms in our area so that really irritated me!

I'm going to try to find it on their website so that I can hear the parts that I missed. It is just so amazing to have these random Leonard Cohen sightings in our day to day life, now. I hope someone tells him how much this means to all of us.

Joe

P. S. Does anyone know when the CBS Sunday Morning segment is going to be re-scheduled?

. . . the imagination which ages like the rest of the body.
Now, isn't that a great quote and perspective ~ and true 8) .

Great idea, Joe ~ I'll go to the 'source' [the site] and see if I can listen from there 8) .

So much for that ~ that's where I already was! I just didn't notice it the first time. When I Googled Jim Lehrer News Hour, I noted that it was the same place I'd already been... NOT "where no man has ever gone before..."!

Meanwhile, it's a great photo of Leonard 8) . He looks like a serious and concerned world leader.

I posted this under Book of Longing News yesterday. I taped it off the TV and have a video. Great shot of Anjani in the audience. When I learn how I will post it somewhere.

I detect a trace of fake modesty in "fake poet".

Well, there are those out there who have already said that Book of Longing is more of a journal and personal accounts than a book of poetry.
