Observations of a Crow - Marty Stuart

Post by Kush »

Observations of a Crow (Austin City Limits)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTVXPXZBbOU

This was an original song from Marty Stuart's superb 1999 release The Pilgrim ... a concept album with appearances by Emmylou Harris and others throughout the album.

The same year Bob Dylan first recorded his equally terrific and far more celebrated song Things Have Changed. Clearly there was some cross-pollination of melody but they are both great songs :)

Rodney Crowell has a new album 'Close Ties' coming out in March and the video for one of the tracks has been released...

It ain't Over Yet (with Rosanne Cash and John Paul White)

Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson Family Band) also makes an appearance

No you don't walk on water
Your sarcasm stings
But the way you move through this old world
Sure makes a case for angel wings

I was half way to the bottom
When you threw me that line
And I'll quote you now verbatim
Get your head out of your own behind

an older song from Fate's Right Hand..

Rodney Crowell is an awesome songwriter and singer....until recently I had only heard a handful of his songs usually covers by other people..

The Flyboy and the Kid

...written for/about Guy Clark. The song and lyrics holds its own despite the obvious channeling of his inner Dylan ! :)

May the wind be at your back
And the world sit at your feet
May you waltz across Wyoming
With a rose clutched in your teeth
May the answers to your questions
Fall like raindrops right on queue
May you set up shop in heaven
'Fore the devil knows you're due

Ooh, here's to love
Here's to life
All the fair and tender ladies
And the plain dirt farmer's wife
Yeah, here's to you
Here's to me
Some ol' mad dog mountain flyboy
And the kid from Tennessee

May your nights be filled with laughter
And your days with honest work
May you wake up smelling roses
When you're facedown in the dirt
If you had the sense to come in
When the storm clouds start to grow
You wouldn't be my right hand
And the best friend that I know

Ooh, here's to life,
Here's to love
When your heart beats like a lion
And your shoes fit like a glove
Yeah, here's to you
Here's to me
Some ol' mad dog mountain flyboy
And the kid from Tennessee

May you always stay in touch with the things
That keep you young
When you're staring at injustice
May you never bite your tongue
May the bear tracks in your future
Find you downwind in a glade
Where the grass as green as absinthe
Comes in forty different shades

Ooh, here's to love
Here's to life
All the fair and tender ladies
And the old fishmonger's wife
Yeah, here's to you
Here's to me
Some ol' mad dog mountain flyboy and the kid from Tennessee

Yeah, set 'em up, drinks for free
It's the mad dog mountain flyboy
And the kid from Tennessee

Re: Life Without Susanna - Rodney Crowell

Post by Kush »

From Rodney Crowell's latest album...

Life Without Susanna
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SoL1vL9mkE

Life without Susanna started when Townes Van Zandt died
From that day on she hid out undercover
Her Percocet and cigarette along for the ride

She made the bed inside her head a shelter
Each new day a sliver through the blinds
I tried tough love, tenderness and anger
But nothing pierced the fortress inside her mind

The first time I saw her she threw me that smile
Pure angel of mercy east Texas style
A poet in gingham, an assassin in jeans
The most near perfect woman I'd ever seen
She was hardly routine

Life without Susanna troubles me in ways hard to express
As she withdrew I grew distant and judgmental
A self-sure bastard and a stubborn bitch
Locked in a deadly game of chess
The upside of my status as a cut above the rest

The last time I saw her was close to the end
I cried like a baby for the shape she was in
No lipstick, no powder to soften the tone
The most worthy opponent that I've ever known
Was already gone

Life without Susanna is something we all have to face
So welcome to the world as we don't know it
Big blue knuckleball free floating somewhere out in space
Where life without Susanna is no man's saving grace
This is life without Susanna and I can't find my place

Btw I saw Marty Stuart a few years back at the Gretna Neighborhood (?) Festival (can't remember exact festival name; Gretna is near New Orleans.)
If you ever get a chance to see him live, don't miss it!

Thanks for that link Squidgy. I had not heard that one before.

But I did see Marty Stuart live :) - even had a brief conversation with him. He is a gentleman. It was at a Wildflower Music festival about a quarter of a century ago in Texas...time flies !

Rosanne Cash does her father's song arguably better or at least as good as the man himself...
