Diamonds in the coalmine weekend...
Hi to all
One or two people who cannot attend Madison (apologies Joe ) and cannot wait for the next walking tour in Connemarra have expressed a desire to meetup in September . I thought therefore it would be a good idea to try an organise an informal get together in the capitol of the peoples republic of South Yorkshire my home town of Barnsley .
Over the years Barnsley has acquired a reputation for being culturally inept with an image of flat caps and whippets so I would like to invite you all for a weekend to bust that myth and show you a modern vibrant town of which I am proud .(**)
I see it as a very informal occasion with the main purpose being to catch on Cohen related topics and see old friends again with a flexible and totally relaxed agenda (very little walking except to the pub) . I have identified a premier inn as the hotel we would stay at as it is in a newly built modern complex with pubs and eating establishments while being very close to the town centre . There is also a small theatre next door .
The dilemma I have however is which weekend to go for so I am opening up this thread for people to firstly let me know if they are interested and if so the dates of their preferred weekend .
Here is how I see the event unfolding ;
Arrive Friday evening check in hotel freshen up and gather in the pub adjacent for a chance to catch up and socialise
Saturday after breakfast explore Barnsley with either with the professional guide ( me ) or simply wander on your own at your own pace .
Saturday evening a group booking at a restaurant ( Jean says no crab )
Sunday after checking out a visit to the National Coal Mining museum at Overton near Wakefield . It is free to get in and you actually go down the mine in a cage for a full guided tour . Very interesting experience !
Obviously this is just a preliminary itinerary and I would be grateful for your imput !

** Must dash I need to go to my allotment to feed the pidgeons ! Now then where have I put my flat cap?

Thanks Pete for your quick response and as for the canary you do not need to bring one . They have a couple of their own at the exit to the mine which strikes me as altogether the wrong place for them to be . You just have to pray they are still alive when you get to them but then if they are dead I don't suppose you will get to them!Pete wrote:Count me in!

I am interested, if the Nat Express goes to Barnsley,as I can't drive. It sounds like good fun, are jam butties thrown in for free, it will save me bringing my own.

Phil and all - I was just practicing the moves in my best swirly dress http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1pMMIe4hb4, when I saw a rumour up in the news section that LC may be playing Dublin August or September...

Phil it sounds wonderful... I have no idea what I will be doing by Sept and yes it may look likely that Leonard will be coming back here to Dublin. The economy is extra tough at the moment so its all up in the air for now. If I can make it I will make it. Thanks for the invitation. I am sure it would be a wonderful and I know lots of us are not going to Madison so here's hoping?

philip......if i hadn't been sitting in wigan parish church last night with pete i wouldn't have known anything about this thread.....so please put my name forward for our trip down the coal mine...but please be aware that when i'm in yorkshire i never eat the local food but do insist on only drinking locally brewed beers but more importantly please take note that i never ever cross worker's and especially miner's picket lines...at the moment any weekend in september suits me fine...ta ken

Sounds good to me, as long as I manage not to break any bones before then. I assume whippets are optional? If not I shall have to put the dog on a crash diet.
Re: Diamonds in the coalmine weekend...
We are interested, not in the first week please.

Not sure what plans are for September yet (only planned up to August and Rebellion festival with an option on Beatiful Days) but if work doesn't intervene (and I have leave left for the Friday and Monday) there is the germ of a plan there

Re: Diamonds in the coalmine weekend...
I would like to thank everyone who has replied to this thread and the positive reaction you have all given to my plans . I am still keen to try and get this meet up off the ground but with all the rumours of what Leonard will be doing to promote the new album in 2012 I think it best if I just hold fire a little while so as not to clash with anything far more significant to the members of this forum which would then jeapodise participation in the Barnsley meet
As soon As I am sure that nothing of any significance is taking place in September then I will go ahead and post a date and other information relevant to my plans

Ps Stan I can assure you Barnsley is open on weekends just make sure you bring your passport so you can have it stamped with the official logo of the people's republic of South Yorkshire.
