Re: Were Leonard Cohen to write a memoir
Another couple: LC's father comes into songs all the way through his career, but most interestingly I think in 'Here it is'. There is clearly a lot he has not said and could say about this relationship, which was so crucial to him. So if he wrote a memoir, I would hope he would talk a lot about his ...

Re: New live album: Can't Forget
The ref to 'coming home without Lili Marlene' in Famous Blue Raincoat is also often said to be to Nico. As for Joan of Arc, she was definitely a real historical figure. The transcript of her trial still survives. She was nothing like the Joan of LC's song, though. I often think (well, since I first ...

Re: L.C. Song Hunt
Could be almost anything- but I'll go for Banjo, as powerful and pared down. 'There's something that I'm watching, means a lot to me. It's a broken banjo bobbing on a dark infested sea. Don't know how it got there, prob'ly taken by the waves Off of someone's shoulder, or out of someone's grave. It's...

I'd like him to talk about Judaism and the future of Judaism.

Re: Sharon Robinson's album EVERYBODY KNOWS (August 2008)
Since I bought this album at Sharon R's Glasgow concert as well as Caffeine, and have just finished listening to it, I thought I would note how much I've enjoyed it as well. Summertime is great, Invisible Tattoo is fabulous, and The Train and Party for the Lonely are both very clever. I liked Susten...

Re: Sharon's new album: Caffeine
Now listened to this album all the way through. It's a great listen. 'One More Song' is the stand-out for me- both the song itself, and the way she sings it, with so much heart. But I also really liked 'Along for the ride', and most of the others as well, really. I really like her take on the intell...

Just wanted to say how great it was that Sharon R did a European tour, and to thank her especially for coming to Glasgow!

Thanks- I will look out for her if she comes over in this direction. On your Diamonds and Rust clip, Judy sounds, amazingly, not that different after all these years- but her voice and Joan Baez' sure as heck don't blend.

Re: Need to get permission to use Leonard's poems as song ly
I much enjoyed the setting of 'Other Writers', which I thought brought out well a certain tenderness and innocence in the poem that I hadn't actually noticed when I read it. Worth pursuing this further, I would have thought. Not so impressed by the two straightforward covers- 'Who by fire' was sweet...

Re: Blue Raincoat and drug addiction ???
Really sorry to hear about the situation your son is in. I hope someone is giving your family help and support with this. Don't know what Tchocolatl means by a 'train song' beyond a song that uses trains as a metaphor for longing, going places, the transitory nature of life and relationships, and so...

Re: Blue Raincoat and drug addiction ???
Thanks, Tchocolatl. I guess Chelsea Hotel #2 comes from a period in which I often have trouble making sense of LC's writing. The level of anger, hatred and contempt towards women he expresses in some of the songs from New Skin for the Old Ceremony and poems from around the same period frightens and ...

Re: Blue Raincoat and drug addiction ???
I'm sorry about your friend. LC is a surprising example of someone who apparently took vast quantities of drugs, but somehow remained ultimately untouched by them. LC's best song in tribute to someone who died of an OD, and hence in my view his best song on the topic, is Chelsea Hotel #1 (see Allan ...

Re: Dear Heather
I'd love it if you'd both tell me what you love about it. There are lots of songs I really like on it (especially The Letters, The Faith and Nightingale, though I prefer the version of the latter on Anjani's album), and I love To a Teacher, but it's the only one of his albums I don't like as an albu...
